I think your houses are lovely especially the ones with two storeys. They remind me of New York when I was there many years ago. I also like those lovely young men in dancing costume it reminded me of my Paddy all those years ago
he was a great river dancer. Oh those bridges reminded me of the ones we used to throw ourselves off during our schooldays when we had no lego or computers like they have now
It's great to see such heritage preserved. Those rolling fields in the moors are lovely. When I was there on the Daniel O'donnell appreciation tour
last year I thought it was lovely and I sent postcards to all my friends and family at home and they liked it too. AH memories that's what life is made of.
So on a final note God bless and may Hebden Bridge be as lovely as it was that scorching summer day when I wore my BHS dress it was very short
but no man had his way with me thankfully oh sure I'm too old for that sort of thing now.

Having stood in the hail and the snow ( and selling ALL my buns!) I can only say that after sharing the ale in the chamber pot with the Pace Egg Players, that i have had an interesting(?) day! The photos on the news page can only have been taken at the first 'showing' as some of the players are still actually stood up!
But it was good to see, that despite the inhospitable weather, people still supported the event so well (supported being the operative word!!!) and it was great to meet so many off-comers, especially from over seas!

Laura Halstead. Are we related? My mother was called Halstead when she was born at Hollin Hey, Mytholmroyd.
Is the "site" moving down the Valley to Luddenden-Foot (Fooit or bottom o't' leg). I do hope so. I lived in the main road at LF. My parents had a grocer's shop where we made tea for the Halifax Corp bus drivers and conductors on the Hx - HB route. I was at Sowerby Bridge Grammer Aug '40 to Dec '47. I am a student at the university of Stirling, and tomorrow we are going on strike against the introduction of students having to pay their own tuition fees.
As a former member of Calder High School and its 6th form, I am interested to know whether or not any sixth formers will be taking part in any such demonstration. After all, it's all very well us taking part on their behalf, but isn't it about time the students who are aiming to go to university take action as well?
It's they who shall be affected, and while I am most definitely prepared to protest on their behalf, I think that the schools should get involved as well. As a student in Scotland, I am doing a five year course, and I would be required to pay tuition fees for four of those five years (one year being abroad in France).The upshot of this is that I would probably not be able to go to university here.
I would be very interested to know if there is any action taking place, particularly by Calder High School, and I would be grateful if anyone would let me know.

I live in Adelaide, SA, Australia, but my gg grandfather was born in Hebden Bridge in about 1840. His father Thomas Mitchell was a Stonemason, but I havn't been able to find out any more about this family, and their ancestors. I would be very pleased to here from anyone who can help me with this.

Wife,s family in Morecombe,so will load up on seafood in vinegar (those little rubber things in tiny tubs soaked in vinegar,yuk).Two weeks of sun,sea and sand with maybe a trip to Blackpool to frighten the kids. used to meet other biker friends at Bottom shoulder pub then go to blackpool via the lake district most weekends,ahh the good old days.Over the tops to oxenhope then Skipton for tea at the little chef then on to the devils bridge for more tea and a burger and on to Windermere(more tea)and finally that long hard thrash down the motorway to Blackpool and fish+chips,a few slots a beer and then home through Accrington and burnley(only 40 mins by midnight licence).I,ll just say hi to my cos Lizanne who just got on the Interne tover there.Did you get my e,mail? David, I don’t know anything about the Twig Shop, except that it’s scary to see people walking in and seriously considering buying something they could pick up for free in the nearest copse. Maybe it’s a time-warp in the more money/sense continuum. Maybe it’s a front for a massage parlour, or an opium den... or maybe some business needs to write off a few grand as a tax-loss. It’s baffling. I daredn’t go in, for fear of what I’ll find.

I have the same concerns as you, Jim. I've been living in Toronto for 10 years now, when I arrived January '88 it was bitterly cold, -20 degrees with a wind chill factor which felt like -30. This wasn't unusual for this time of year. However, the winters of '97 and '98 have been the mildest in Ontario's history. Today, it's +2. I'm not a fan of the cold, but this is really worrisome. In my opinion, this mild weather is not a good sign. But what do I know, haven't we been told there is no such thing as the green house effect! Have a good day.

Remember 1976 or 1977? I can barely remember what I was doing last week. The point about the winter of 97/98 is that we haven’t had one. Just after Christmas there were trees in blossom and blue tits looking for nesting sites. This month has been warm; a few days have been almost like summer. Something’s gone wrong with the seasons; it’s all getting a bit Shakespearean. If it carries on like this I’m told that places like Peterborough, Grantham and Retford will be under six feet of water. So that’s alright then.

Are you telling me you don't remember the snow "storms" of 1976 or '77. I remember Calder High closed for the day so that kids could get home. Of course, the snow didn't stay for long, but it was for more than a day.

Hello Raymond. Yes, I remember the steep banking at Calder High School and the fear of being thrown down it. I remember the horror stories I heard about it before I even attended the school. I have to say, it was worse with the snow. I also remember Mr. Duckworth. When I attended CHS, he was no longer the head master but still taught there. He taught me math in my first year, 1975. What I remember the most about living in Mytholmroyd is the fish and chip shop close to the bus stop on the main road. Every Friday teatime, mother would send me with a pound or two in my pocket for fish & chips, with bits, for 4. I also remember when the community centre was first built - didn't the site used to be Thornbers? An Aunt of mine had a store over the bridge, called Mavis's, do you remember it? Anyway, thanks for the memmories. Hope you're enjoying Brockville :-).

Calder High 56-61. During the first
year I remember the head masters name
as Mr.Duckworth. The second year we
transfered to Mytholmroyd, does anyone
remember the fear of being thrown down
the banking, that steep stretch of
muddy slope between the play ground
and the main driveway? My first job was
at Duckworth's grocers on the main street,
this was before supermarkets, and I recall
it was directly across the street from a
butchers called Dewhurst's. I have many
happy memories of Calder High school and
often wonder what happened to my previous

Hello to the Hebden Bridge Web site from Toronto, Canada. I originally grew up in Mytholmroyd, went to Calder High School from 1975 to 1981, and was a dancer for the Hebden Bridge Light Opera Society. My mother still performs in the yearly productions which are held at the cinema/civic theatre, which i'm glad to hear is still standing. Just by chance I was browsing the net when I came upon this WONDERFUL site. Took me down memory lane. The Hebden Bridge Times!!!! Now those were the days!! My family owned the paper and the offices on Market Street for many years and my childhood summer holidays were spent playing in dusty backrooms amongst the spiders and beetles - browsing through leather bound archives of past local events! I well remember when the wonderful spate of factory fires was taking place in the seventies and, in the middle of the night,my father would drag this reluctant young teenager from a warm bed to photograph and observe the latest inferno! My memories of Malham in the 1960's are of a peaceful place with few cars and lots more drunken campers. There was
also a wonderful machine in a shop doorway which provided endless 6d cups of wonderful hot chocolate. Good beer in the Buck? and more
in the other pub over the bridge the name of which escapes me. Is Gordale Scar waterfall still there? It's years since
