Craig Whittaker’s speech

From Jon Morris

Monday, 14 June 2010

I’ve just been looking at Craig Whittaker’s maiden speech. I had no idea there were so many Nobel prize winners from Todmorden.

I also had no idea that he set up a virtual library in Calderdale, where "every child under the age of five gets a free book monthly". I’ve never heard of this scheme, and can’t find anything about it on the council website or elsewhere on the internet. Except, of course, in reports of his speech. I thought that libraries were already free for children anyway.

Likewise, I can’t find any information about the virtual head teacher fund, although I did find an article about 1/3 of Calderdale’s heads quitting.

Can anyone give me any more details on these achievements?
