Cape Asbestos

From Julie C

Thanks to Hebweb for reminding us of the horrors of Cape. When I first came to Hebden this was a very ‘live’ issue, there were regular inquest reports in the Hebden Bridge Times of yet another Asbestos related death. I recollect at least one Asbestos Action Group meeting in the room above the Hole in the Wall. I had a neighbour who succumbed, a wagon driver who used to deliver to the factory. I remember his final weeks, leaning over his back gate, a blanket over his shoulders, coughing and wheezing out his last breaths. Victims’ families have previously resisted a memorial to those who lost their lives at Cape, I wonder if that is still how people feel.
