Royd

Having changed my area of work from North to West Yorkshire I now very often come across the word /term `ROYD`, i.e. MytholmROYD, ROYDs Mill, Westroyd etc. Anyone know of the origin of this word?

I am told it means a clearing in woodlands and is an old english word. I am not sure that is now used in the correct way though, I once saw a road called Wood Royd.....
