SiD comes to Hebden Bridge

Monday, 27 September 2010

The SiD van is coming to Hebden Bridge this Friday 1 October.

SiD is a mobile Speed Indicator Device who rewards drivers with a smile if they are travelling within the speed limit and gives a frown to those who aren't.

SiD is waiting to respond to residents' concerns about traffic speeds on their local roads. Residents are being encouraged to email or call SiD to book a visit to their street. SiD will also tour local schools giving children the opportunity to encourage drivers to slow down around their schools.

Distraction often means that many drivers unwittingly fail to notice increases in their speed. There are also those who show a disregard for the safety of others and choose to ignore any speed limit or drive appropriately in areas around schools and residential streets. SiD aims to encourage all drivers to 'Share our Road Space Safely'.

SiD will record vehicle speeds and this information will give the Council a clearer picture of areas of concern. Residents will receive a copy of the results of SiD's speed measurements; he will also send the details onto local Ward Forums and Sgt Chris Boyd, Traffic Manager, Calderdale division of WY Police.

Sgt Boyd says: "What SID tells me will help me to decide where the Police need to carry out speed enforcement. This means we can concentrate on locations where we are likely to have the most impact on reducing collisions where speed is a factor."

Kate Marsh, Calderdale Council's Deputy Road Safety Officer says: "We are really pleased that we are now able to quickly respond to our residents' concerns about inappropriate and excessive speeds. Excessive speeds on local streets create anxiety within local communities. We know that many drivers appreciate a quick reminder about their speed through the use of vehicle activated signs and we hope SiD will encourage everyone to share road space safely."

If you would like SiD to visit your street then please call SiD on 01422 392804 or email sid@calderdale.gov.uk
