CONCERT for TIBET - Overwhelming Success!
Saturday, May 6, 2006
TIBET SUPPORT GROUP set up in Hebden Bridge
Co-organiser of the event, Jodie Underhill was delighted that so many people came to the event; 'Richard and I are overwhelmed with the success of the evening and the money we have raised will go a long way in Tibet. We would like to thank everyone who took part, including the staff and volunteers at The Trades Club, you have all been fantastic'.
A two hour flight over Yorkshire in a private plane was kindly donated by Nick Cohen and auctioned. Three lucky people won the flights, raising £600. Performing at the benefit gig were Tanjy Wilson, Sugar Fire and Wild Ginger, all of whom went down a storm. There was also a DVD & slide presentation with wonderful images, plus information about Tibet.
The concert was primarily organised to raise awareness about the Tibetan situation in the run up to the Olympic Games which are to be held in Beijing in 2008. China's appalling human rights record is subject to much criticism, with an official report by the United Nations admitting that "Torture is still widespread in Tibet and China".
More than 1.2 million Tibetans have died since 1959 as a direct result of the Chinese Invasion. Over 100,000 more, including H.H. The Dalai Lama have fled into exile.
