BT phone boxes under threat

Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Calderdale Council has been asked for its views on the removal of 33 public call boxes across Calderdale.

There are currently 173 in Calderdale - 19 will be removed without consultation because there are others within 400 metres.

The issue was discussed at the Council's Regeneration and Development Scrutiny Panel this week.

Councillor Barry Collins, chairman of the Scrutiny Panel said:

"We accept that the use of public call boxes has declined in recent years, and that it may be appropriate for some of them to be removed.

"However, not everyone has a phone in there home or a mobile phone, and we have a duty to look after the interests of all members of the community. We therefore believe that it is important for the people of Calderdale to have their say on this issue."

If you wish to comment on the removal of any call boxes please write to the Development Manager, Planning and Regeneration Services, Northgate House, Halifax, HX1 1UN, quoting the phone box number. Alternatively emails should be sent to town.planning@calderdale.gov.uk.

The call boxes under threat in our area are:

  • King Street, Hebden Bridge
  • Keighley Road, Pecket Well
  • Blackshaw Head
