Headlice
From Mrs Lockett
Lichfield
Tuesday, July 3, 2001

I would be most grateful if some one can explain the reocurring problem of head lice . my daughter seems to have constant head lice no matter how many times i treat her hair one day back at school and she has them again . no treatment has been passed by , aroma therapy , electronic device, conditioners and treatments . why does the school not send out letters anymore , it is such a problem why be embarrassed to imform parents , bring back the old fashioned " nit nurse", it is not fair on parents who are spending lots of time and money trying to wipe out the problem .

School Dinners
From Martin Tibbetts

The school canteen is not technically part of the school. The Local Education Authority run the canteen, employ their own staff, control the school menus and promote their service independently.

Having said that, the canteen staff are seen as part of our school even though, technically,we are not allowed to set foot in the school kitchens. The position will change in 12 months time when the school will gain control over the kitchens and be expected to make it a profitable source of income to the school budget. If the school took over the current kitchen as it stands, it is making a huge loss as not enough pupils are having school meals and would be bad news for a school trying to keep staffing levels as they are and improving standards in education.

The LEA realise this and are actively trying to promote school meals take-up. The recent "lottery initiative"was an attempt by the LEA to reward pupils who regularly have a school meal and to promote their service.

It was not seen as a divisive issue or designed to make "sandwich eaters" feel excluded. While I understand Mr Edwards' concerns and applaud the reason for his decision to promote a family meal at home rather than take the easier option of providing his children with the main daily meal at school, I felt it important to inform parents about the relationship bewtween the school and LEA catering facilities.

As a Headteacher, I think that the school canteen staff are are a credit to our community and they respond positively to any school iniative. Just look at "Grandparents Day" and the "Chinese New Year". They didn't have to do that, but did so.

School Dinners

My daughter had recently come home from school complaining that she and her freinds were unable to join the lunch bunch, because she was only staying sandwiches. I have to admit I did not take that much notice at the time. However on the latest letter from the Headmaster I see at the bottom an NB which states, children staying hot dinners will get a raffle ticket to win easter eggs. This again excludes children taking sandwiches, and I was wondering why this is?

The reason my daughter takes sandwiches is quite simple, my daughter sits down with the rest of the family for a hot dinner together each evening. I feel this is a very important part of family life, where she learns ,among other things, how to eat correctly.

I'm sure there is a reason for excluding children taking sandwiches or going home at dinnertime, but I would like it explained to me so I can explain it to my daughter, so she doesn't feel victimised.

Parking

Regarding the problem of parking, the only solution that i can think of would be to either provide a school bus, or to consider car sharing where maybe one parent could take a set number of children to school taking it in turns to do the school run. It does seem that all common sense flies out of the window when it comes to the school run, I am just waiting to see which car gets the privilege of reversing into me or my daughter or maybe both of us as they attempt to park in the layby as we walk along the path to school. Walking is best, But THE CAR RULES.

Thank you for your email about the travel chaos outside school at the end of the day. I have sent your email to the parent forum on the website in the hope that it might encourage others to debate the issue.

The travel arrangements have occupied school thinking ever since I have been at the school. The Governors have debated it long and hard but, despite iniatives such as the "Walk to School week", and many letters from me, there is little improvement.

During the summer, a new car parking scheme will relieve prressure on the Leisure Centre car park with card barrier access only to the two schools at the rear. This will protect our youngest children from danger posed by "illicit parking" and car movement by both parents and High School 6th formers with vehicles. Additional car parking places will be created between the two schools and at the rear of the High School.

Linked with the scheme is a proposal to create a zebra crossing across the drive from the Leisure Centre car park for pupil safety.

Phase two of the scheme, which has not yet been agreed by the LEA, is to create a coach park for High School coaches further up the Saredon Road near to Lodge Lane. I hope this will improve the situation. Thank you for raising your concerns which are shared by all the teachers in our school. The current situation is an "accident waiting to happen"

To Mr Tibbetts

ÝÝÝWe are a group of parents concerened over the parking at school , trying to leave today was very difficult and very dangerous both to the children and the drivers . it seems that just a drop of rain brings everyone out in their cars , they have no thought of where they park just seem to abandon them as close to the school as possible , we always collect our children on foot as do lots of parents ,and feel it is sheer luck that no-one has been injured , when you are trying to push a pushchair, and keep an eye on toddlers as well as your school chilldren its becoming almost impossible. Is there no way the schools both primary and high school can instill in these parents the danger they are putting our children in.

Thank you for your time and im very sorry if I have sent this email to the wrong Ýlocation .

BNRR
from Trevor Edwards

Monday, March 19, 2001

I would like to thank Mr Tibbetts for allowing the BNRR roadshow to take place in his school.

Having just got back from this exhibition though, I found it upsetting and sad. What small bit of green fields that are left around the school are to be destroyed. The new motorway will be so close to the school it is certain to affect the air quality for our children. Sad also to see that they are now saying it will not reduce congestion on the M6. I'm not against new roads that have obvious benefits, I just don't see any with this road.

What saddened me most today was that with all the money spent on fancy maps and people to explain all about the new motorway at this exhibition, they couldn't even spell the name of a local place correctly, and couldn't even pronounce the name of a local village correctly.

To top off a disappointing afternoon, I obviously asked a question too tricky for the experts there, because after asking just one question the expert refused to speak to me again.

Perhaps if I had asked my questions in a diffrent order I would have had more answers, but I fear a lot of questions will never be answered, or at least not until after it is built.

I have just read your article in the EC&T magazine and then visited your website which I am most impressed with. Thank you for allowing me, and all who wish to, such a wonderful "look" at your school.

Cheslyn Hay Primary School was a very different place when I was a pupil there being housed in the Victorian buildings the other side of Pinfold Lane. Having passed my 11+, I entered Cannock Grammar School in its first year (1955). My teacher training was at St. John's College, York and I taught in a number of York schools before obtaining my first headship in Northamptonshire in 1972. For 20years (!!!) I have been head of Avondale Junior School in Kettering (a "challenging" school and area) making me the longest serving Head in our County. Our web site is not published yet but hopefully will be on line this next term.

I have relatives in Cheslyn Hay still and visit quite often. You may know Joe Cadman, who was clerk to the Parish Council for many years: he is my uncle being married to my late mother's sister.

Please pass on to the staff and children my wishes for a happy new year. Hopefully the flooded areas wil be dry for tomorrow!

I was impressed by the work published in the year areas of the site.

The parents comments were interesting! This year our performance was the Tales of Hans Christian Andersen; we deliberately avoided a nativity scene too! We covered the Christian aspect elsewhere as you did no doubt.

Thanks for the prompt notification about the floods on 2.1.2001. Not all of us have a daily local paper to rely on for information and posting info on the website is invaluable. Hope it's all dried out by Monday.

Christmas Play

From Trevor Edwards

Tuesday, December 19, 2000

Can I congratulate everyone involved in the Christmas play put on by years 3 and 4 (Rudolph the red nose reindeer). My wife and I have watched many plays over the years, our four children range from 24 to 7 and we have fostered for over 15 years, and have seen at least one play, (and often more), every year for 20 years. We both rank this one as being one of the best ever.

Well done to all the children involved, and well done to all the staff.

Wot no Nativity

From nigel Haywood

Whilst i must congratulate the staff and pupils for their efforts and perfomances in the recent christmas end of term 'shows', i do feel that it is sad that whilst Christmas has only one true foundation, that being to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, that there was not one nativity play at all. Why is it that so many children today have little or no conception of what Christmas(Christianity) is about. Given that there are so many well written modern versions of the nativity, i feel that we are cheating our young people in not exposing them to the most wonderful storey ever told. O.K. i am a christian and have more motive than some to see our children exposed to this historical truth. But i do not think that christians are alone in wishing that their children weere exposed to the truth of christmas, more than they seem to be in school these days anyway. I would appreciate your coments.

Christmas Fayre

Can you spare a little of your time to help at the Christmas Fayre on Friday 24th November??

The PTFA needs help running the various stalls and attractions but if you can't make it on the day perhaps you could bake a cake for the cake stall or provide a small prize for one of the many other attractions.

The next PTFA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 8th November at 7-30 pm and will be held in the school staffroom. Everyone is more than welcome so please come along if you can find the time.

If you are unable to attend our meetings but would still like to help - maybe just spending half an hour at home stuffing envelopes - then please get in touch.

Regards,

Christian Davies
PTFA Chair.

Your web site

I am the Head Teacher of Fairfield Junior School in Stockton and am surfing school web sites to get good ideas for our own! Yours is certainly the best school site I have visited. You must have all put a great deal of hard work into it. Your parents should be very proud of the children and staff. Well done!

Car Parking

The PTFA are looking at taking down the front fence, cutting away a large section of turf and creating a loop "park and drive away" section (rather like the High School "pull in" ). But we'd want LEA support and finance.

The other suggestion was a car park to the left of the house just past the school house in the before Lodge Lane.

Would you use it? It would mean accessing the playground via the sports field.

Option three- re-discovering legs! What about a "walk-bus"? Where a couple of parents agree to crocodile walk several families of children in their street or road to school and collect on a rota basis? (The Japanese do this apparently!)

The current position is basically an accident waiting to happen with traffic wardens not having a clear view of the road due to the double parking on the Saredon Road.

The problem is compounded by the fact that there are 2000 car journeys a day to our site (High and Primary School statistics)which prohibits parking on site.

We are struggling as a school to find solutions. Any ideas or comments/frustrations you have will be valued!

History

Question. Is local village history and legends taught or researched by the school as a project? If not why not?
Best regards

Peter Harley

Friday, January 7, 2000

Yes Peter we do teach local history. At some point I'd like the web site to reflect that. We have a very prescriptive National Curriculum in the UK on top of which we teach the "literacy hour" once a day, followed by the "numeracy hour". It is hard to pack it all in.

Should Cheslyn Hay eat beef?

The LEA have asked us to consider having beef back on the school dinner menu. What do you think? We need your views.

I think Beef should be back on the menu! But not on the bone or the items like pies which I still feel needs more research and care!

First of all ongratulations on an excellent web site. My daughter attends the school and I would have no objections to her being served beef. I suspect that school dinners do not stretch to T-Bone steaks, however I guess that stews, minced beef etc are being proposed and these are fine with me.

The Mental Maths Monkey

Our numeracy hour has made local and National news. More mental maths means less written maths! Does that worry you? If you want to know more about the numeracy hour, ask your question here.

Clubs for Parents

We are looking at setting up clubs in art, IT,languages (learn how too rder that meal in another language before the summer holiday!) as well as offering distance learning courses with the University. What other clubs and courses do you want school to run both in schol time or in the evenings. Send your ideas now.

Parking

There are over 2000 car journeys a day made to our campus. This makes the Saredon Road a dangerous place at the end of the school day. Have you any suggestions for improving the parking situation? Send your ideas now.
