Is Mytholmroyd disappearing?

Posted by Anne Handley, Friday, July 13, 2001

Has anyone else noticed a worrying trend towards completely omitting 'Mytholmroyd' from the address? I've had a lot of forms to fill in lately, mostly over the phone, and although I go to great pains to tell them the name of the village I live in, spell it out and even sometimes attempt an explanation of its derivation! - when I receive the first letter from them it is always address to: first line of address, Hebden Bridge, HX7 ... I can see how this happens, because small groups of properties can be pinpointed by their postcode, and HX7 covers the area around HB. And it's a lot easier to type the first line of the address and postcode into a computer, and then the rest happens automatically. But is there anything we can do about it? I'm even beginning to convince myself I live in Hebden Bridge now! This must happen to a lot of villages around the country. Is there an 'autonomous village postal address' campaign?
