Calder Valley MP joins the rebels

Among the 53 Labour MPs who voted against the Government over Iraq yesterday evening were the two Calderdale MPs: Alice Mahon (Halifax) and Christine McCafferty (Calder Valley). Christine McCafferty has formerly supported the Government over bombing in Iraq and Serbia - see previous Hebweb news - so local opponents of the proposed war in Iraq will be delighted she has kept the promise she made at a Hebden Bridge public meeting in January called, at that time, to discuss the war in Afghanistan.

Mrs McCafferty said the dossier contained nothing new and that was not a good basis for going to war.

"We should do everything to ensure that weapons inspectors can go back to Iraq to do their job in an unrestricted capacity," she said.
