Grammar Schools

From David Thompson

When I came to live in Calderdale nearly 30 years ago, I was surprised that there were still grammar schools here. I remember thinking, "how quaint, is this the land that time forgot?" Recent statements by the P.M. have brought the subject to mind again. Why do we still have grammar schools and the 11 Plus in Calderdale?

Before local government reorganisation in the early 1970s the area now covered by Calderdale was part West Riding County Council and part Halifax Borough, each with their own education authorities. The West Riding was very progressive (under Alec Clegg) and introduced comprehensive education well before it arrived in most areas. Halifax was very much attached to its grammar schools. Despite the abolition of both authorities there has never been a uniform policy on secondary education across Calderdale.
