Wild flowers in Calder Holmes Park

From Mary Ashman

Friday, 27 July 2018

The areas planted with wild flowers in the park are glorious and are attracting many butterflies, bees and other insects. So I hope the  the rumour that the Rotary Club plan to scythe down the area by the river to make way for hot dog and burger concessions at the Vintage Car Festival next week is unfounded.

The flowers are not 'finished' by any means and the car festival is only for two days.  Please can the flowers be spared for visitors to enjoy for the rest of the summer.

I’m happy to confirm there is no substance to this rumour. The Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge will not be ‘scything’ down any wildflowers for the Vintage Weekend (Sat 4th and Sun 5th August). Calderdale Council’s Safer, Cleaner & Greener teams do a fantastic job of looking after the park and we will hand it back to them after the event in the same condition we received it.

And, we have much more than mere ‘hotdog and burger concessions’ in our Food Court. There will be a wide choice of local purveyors of high quality food at reasonable prices, the list includes:

Working The Streets (The Yorkshire Pie & Pea Company) Bratwurst & Polish sausage with German relishes, Baked potatoes with various fillings & salad, Gourmet beef burgers, Curries, Hot beef baguettes with onions, Hot turkey baguettes, Speciality pies & peas, Salads

The Crepe Company. Once again Glen will be serving both sweet and savoury Crepes throughout the day along with other tasty snacks.

Cafe Cio. Sarah will be serving top quality specialty coffees and cakes from her well-equipped van and will provide plenty of seating for you to sit and relax while enjoying the fare.

East West. East West Catering has been making and supplying authentic Indian cuisine for over 25 years and built a reputation on using only the freshest food infused with the finest ingredient’s using traditional handmade cooking methods that have been passed down from generations.

Porcus. Sausage sandwiches etc: Porcus is a small farm business nestling on the moors above the incredible food town of Todmorden in the South Pennines. Their traditional rare breed pigs are raised outdoors to the highest welfare standards, just as nature intended. They’re happy, healthy and active as they range freely around our fields: because we raise them for longer, they’re fit as fiddles and fantastically flavoursome!

Fab’s Ices. Two vans will be on the field fully stocked with a delicious selection of ice cream and other treats.

The Fish Finger Bar. Selling fish finger sandwiches, fish finger baps and wraps. Also includes a kiddy menu. Extras includes fresh salads, cheese and coleslaw.

Pextenement Cheese Company. Founded in 2008, the Pextenement Cheese Company  produces high quality handmade cheeses solely from the organic milk produced by Pextenement Farm.

There will be approximately 400 classic and vintage vehicles (including motorcycles) on the park each day of the Vintage Weekend, together with stalls selling a wide range of produce, children’s rides and live music.

All proceeds from the Vintage Weekend (and the Duck Race) go to charities and good causes, most of them local. On average the club distributes £35,000 in grants per year and since 2007 has distributed £387,000. The list of grants made here can be found here

We look forward to seeing you at the Vintage Weekend.  More info
