Could you be a local COVID-19 Champion?

Saturday, 9 January 2021

A volunteering scheme to support local communities during the Coronavirus pandemic has been rolled out across Calderdale.

The Calderdale COVID-19 Champion initiative was set up to support Calderdale communities impacted by Coronavirus.

Help to make the right choices

This volunteering opportunity is pivotal to the borough's recovery from the pandemic. Community Covid-19 Champions are there to help share information and help develop Calderdale's response to the virus in the future. They help family, friends and other community members to make sense of the latest facts and guidance about the virus, make informed choices and keep our communities safe.

Over 70 Calderdale Covid-19 Champtions

Over 70 people across Calderdale have now been trained as COVID-19 Champions. The online training is delivered by three Calderdale residents who are retired medical professionals, including Calderdale Councillor, Colin Hutchinson. They give their time and expertise for free to help keep communities safe.  COVID-19 Champions also have access to regular support meetings to get the latest updates and feedback on behalf of their communities.

One Covid Champion from Halifax commented, "There's a lot of confusion and misinformation out there in the community and that has an impact on the way people are behaving. I thought that the COVID-19 Champions training was really interesting and now I've done it, I feel more knowledgeable and in a better position to give accurate information about the reality of the coronavirus."

Also available through schools and colleges

The Covid Champions programme will also be available through schools and colleges, equipping young people with the knowledge they need to raise awareness among their peers.

Training sessions

The training sessions can also be delivered to community groups, so for example, if your online community choir, crafting group, faith group etc, would like to take part in the initiative, the training can be delivered as part of your regular meetings.

Stop COVID spreading

With a wider understanding of COVID-19, how we can prevent the spread and local information and update, together we can help empower people with the information they need to protect themselves, their family, friends and work mates.
