Town Council to tackle pollution with a superplant

Recent research by the Royal Horticultural Society has shown that a hedging plant, Cotoneaster Franchetti is efficient at trapping harmful airborne particles emitted by road vehicles.
Hebden Royd Town Council's Climate Emergency Committee has launched a project to plant this shrub in the strips of land bordering the A646. The first of these will be planted at Hope Baptist Church and at the new cycle park at the end of Old Gate. Hebden Royd Methodist Church have also offered to have a hedge planted along the entire length of its garden and the Council are hoping that other landowners along the A646 will join the scheme later in the year.
The scheme has launched just in time for the UK's first ever National Hedgerow Week which will take place from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 6 June 2021, to highlight the immense contribution these unsung heroes of the natural world make in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss and to raise awareness of the threats they face.
