Works have started on the park. Shrubbery has been cleared from the banking to make way for re-grading and re-leveling in order to accommodate the new raised walkway (CMBC’s parks team have tried to save what they can and accommodate this into the new scheme)

Later on this week the scheme will be marked out and the on site contract works will begin on Tuesday the 8th of May and should take approximately six weeks to complete.

The site layout plan differs slightly from the consultation plan in that the performance area has been removed. There were a number of issues that meant that on reflection this was not the best place to site such a feature.

Consultation in relation to the walkway was carried out with people also making comments and recommendations for future works in the park. Hebden Royd Town council is very interested in all park users opinions on the park and will be carrying out further consultation before any future works take place. CALDER HOLMES PARK
"Regeneration"

Hebden Royd Town Council and Calderdale MBC have put together a package of money which means that Phase 3 of the Park’s regeneration can be carried out - the upgrading of the walkway to the station. This scheme was originally outlined in the Hebden Bridge Times and Town Talk in 2001 and involved a three staged approach to improvements to the park. Phase 1 and 2 (the Cycleway and Skate Park) have subsequently been completed.

A brief has been developed for phase 3 that concentrates on the walkway but looks at it in the context of the park as a whole. At present the main part of the park lacks distinguishing features and it was agreed that a lit undulating walkway taking the park user from park to canal height could serve the dual purpose of providing this feature and creating a safe lit route from the town centre to the station. The scheme will include a variety of additional native trees and flowering perennial style plants and the path will gently slope so that it complies with the Disability Discrimination Act.

New park benches will be positioned in bays along the paths edge. The working group is also looking at the possibility of a raised performance area. Three new access points (with closing gates) are also planned between the canal and park thereby connecting up the two facilities. A number of picnic tables will also be provided as part of the overall scheme.

Calderdale Safer Communities Partnership have contributed £11000 towards the scheme enabling the pathway to be lit with EEC standard column style lighting

The plans for the scheme are on display at Hebden Royd Town Council’s notice boards (outside the Council Offices on St Georges St, at the Bridge Gate car park and at County Bridge, Mytholmroyd). Larger scale plans are also available to look at at the Council Offices on St Georges Street. There is a questionnaire to fill in (which can also be collected from the Council Offices, libraries and Tourist Information Centre) concerning the communities opinions on the scheme and park as a whole, including the play and sports areas.
