Secondary school results: 2007

Thursday, 10 January 2008

Calder High's GCSE results for those receiving five or more GCSEs, including Maths and English, have shown a reasonable improvement (52%) over last year's disappointing ones (42%). As we reported last year, the Government has moved the goalpost. The 5 A-C GCSEs must now include Maths and English. Under the old (pre-2006) system Calder High would have 67% with 5 A-C GCSEs (not necessarily including Maths and English) compared with 2004 (61%) and 2005 (63%).

Stephen Ball, Headteacher of Calder High School, has told the Hebden Bridge Web that "The school's overall GCSE pass rate at 5 higher grades is 67% - the highest figure in its History and the number of A and A* grades achieved meant that the Times included the school in its list of top state schools."

Fifty two per cent with 5 A-Cs including Maths and English is just above the national average (46.7%). Calder High's 'A' level showing has improved slightly but results are still over 60 points below the national average. The Hebden Bridge Web welcomes the improvements. Calder High was one of the first ever comprehensive schools in the country - given Calder High's catchment area it has long been our stated view that the school's results should be even better.
