Benefit gig for Palestine with short talk by Gaza activist and blogger Sharyn Lock

Tuesday, 14 July 2009

Palestine human rights activist Sharyn Lock will give a short talk about her time in Gaza at Hebden Bridge trades Club on Saturday July 18th during a benefit gig for Palestine. The gig features local band the Fat Rascals, singers David and Dawn plus DJs Edd Trance and Vicky. The evening begins at is 8.30pm.

Sharyn was in Gaza before, during and after the conflict there which began in December 2009 and ended 3 weeks later. More than 1400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis died. She is medically trained and was involved in giving medical assistance to some of the thousand who were wounded. Sharyn arrived in Gaza in one of the boats which last year breached the Israeli blockade of the Strip. The boats delivered humanitarian supplies donated by international organisations

Money raised at the gig will go to direct-action human rights organisations working in the West Bank of Palestine. The organisers of the event, Jill Chadwick and Ron Taylor, are also looking into ways of forming a twinning link between Hebden Bridge and communities in Palestine which are threatened by the continuing military occupation under which more and more land is being confiscated for illegal Israeli settlements.
