The elections will be held on held on Thursday 4th June 2009 between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm

Nearly 70 candidates are standing in the Yorkshire constituency and just six will be elected. There are 12 political parties putting up candidates - all the normal parties as well as the Jury Team, Arthur Scargill's Socialist Labour Party and the Christian Party "Proclaiming Christ’s Lordship".

The system of voting since 1999 has been a closed list form of proportional representation. This means that you have one vote and you can only vote for the party list - not the individual candidates.

Seats are awarding using a quota system. The first seat that a party wins goes to the first person on its list, the second seat to the second person, and so on, until the party has either not won any more seats or has run out of names on its list.

The 12 parties are

  • BNP
  • Christian Party
  • Conservative Party
  • English Democrats Party
  • Jury Team
  • Liberal Democrats
  • No2EU
  • Pro Democracy
  • Socialist Labour Party
  • The Green Party
  • The Labour Party
  • UKIP

For a full list of candidates, see this page on the Kirklees website which is useful in showing where the candidates actually live. Only one candidate is from Hebden Bridge - our former Town Mayor and Calderdale councillor, Nader Fekri. However, because he is number five on the Lib Dem list it is pretty safe to say he won't be elected.

The current MEPs for the Yorkshire constituency are

Linda McAvan, Labour from Wath-upon-Dearne, Mexborough

Timothy Kirkhope, Conservative, Knaresborough

Diana Wallis, Liberal Democra, Hull

Godfrey Bloom, UKIP, Selby

Richard Corbett, Labour, Leeds

Edward McMillan-Scott, Conservative, Boston Spa
