Mytholmroyd ArtsNew poetry book celebrates Mytholmroyd

Friday, 6 October 2017

Mytholmroyd ArtsPoet Winston Plowes and artist Hannah Greenwood have collaborated to create an impressionistic portrait of Mythomroyd and its community.

Commissioned by Mytholmroyd Arts, their new booklet Watermarks: A Mytholmroyd Abecedary will be launched at this year’s Mytholmroyd Arts Festival, 14th and 15th October in a limited edition of 100 copies.

With a verse for each letter of the alphabet, the poem has been created from scraps of conversations, messages, notices and found texts which Winston has woven together with his own observations into a portrait of the community, while Hannah has produced precise images to illustrate some of the lines of text.

Artistic Director Annie Harrison said, "Mytholmroyd Arts is delighted once again to have a strong poetry and spoken word content in this year’s Festival. Winston and Hannah have worked their magic, and produced this wonderful poetry booklet which we hope will be the first of many Mytholmroyd Arts publications."

Winston Plowes sai,d "The text for Watermarks was harvested over 25 visits to Mytholmroyd to form a wordscape where the narrative of a traditional poem is replaced by the coincidence and collision of found words, and where rhyme is replaced by the rhythm and music of repetition. I hope every reader will find something different, surprising and rewarding within this itenary of life in the village."
