Wainsgate Concert: The Retrosettes

Contemporary music with a retro flavour

Thursday, 19 April 2018

Wainsgate Chapel’s 2018 Concert Season starts Sunday 29th April and between now and October there’s a real variety of different musical styles on offer including New-wave folk, jazz guitar, choral music and solo classical percussion; not to mention a ‘cello and guitar duo, a string quartet and kicking off the season in great style the highly-praised Retrosettes.

Retrosettes

Influenced heavily by contemporary folk, 50s rock n roll and especially pop and soul music from the 60s, Manchester-based quintet The Retrosettes are the quintessential “big in Europe” band, for example touring Germany with Simply Red and playing to huge crowds there. They went back on tour around Europe in March 2017 and released their debut album ‘1, 2, Yes, Go!’ which was album of the week on several major radio stations in Germany.

The Retrosettes inject contemporary music with a retro flavour and revive the past within a modern landscape. Their music has been described as combining modernity and vintage in a cool, elegant mix of sounds from 1960s Pop, Northern Soul and Disco. It seamlessly echoes the era of The Beatles but nonetheless blends perfectly into the present day.

Their laid-back, feel-good vibes and their individual style captures and entrances their audiences, especially in live concerts. For this performance lead singers Paul and Helen Bytheway, who also play guitar and keyboards, will appear as an acoustic duo performing intimate versions of their album tracks, some quirky covers and some exclusive new songs never performed by the full band.

“This is our 11th concert series at Wainsgate” said organizer Dave Nelson “and in terms of covering musical styles or genres it’s probably the most varied one yet. There’s got to be something for everyone this year!”

The Retrosettes’ concert starts at 3pm and tickets, which are only available at the door, cost £10, and £8 with a special price of £3 for under 18s. The next concert at Wainsgate Chapel is on June 3rd and features acclaimed ‘cellist Helen Thatcher together with classical guitarist Neil Darwent performing works by Astor Piazzolla and other contemporary South American composers.
