Parade Spark Day is a Hit

Tuesday, 27 March 2012

Hebden Bridge got into the parade spirit on Saturday with a Spark Day to launch this year’s Handmade Parade.

Organisers say they were bowled over with the quality and quantity of ideas that poured in via suggestion boxes at the Co-op and Hebden Bridge Library and in person on the day.

The Spark Day at Holme Street Arts Centre featured a crown-making workshop, a spectacular demonstration of capoeira – a mix of dance and martial arts from Brazil – live music, a big  'draw an idea' space and some visiting characters from previous parades.

Visitors of all ages joined in the fun and put forward ideas about what they’d like to see in this year’s parade.

Parade co-ordinator Rebecca Dearden said: "It was a fantastic day with lots of people getting into the parade spirit, an amazing demonstration of capoeira and inflatable costume-making, which are both skills we'll be teaching at special parade classes this year.

“A big thank you to everyone who put forward ideas, pictures and a touch of madness. All the ideas were discussed and the theme will be announced very soon. It's going to be the best parade yet.”

The parade, now in its fifth year, starts at 2pm on Saturday, June 23 and will wind its way through town to Calder Holmes Park for a spectacular finale.

Workshops will be held from June 2 to 21 and will be open to anyone who wants to get involved in creating parade art, giant puppets or costumes. There will also be special classes for teenagers and adults who want to get stuck into a new skill – from stilt-walking, joining the samba or street brass bands to making giant willow sculptures.
