Calder Community Cares delivers 300 bowls of soup, sandwiches and a smile!

Over the past three weeks, Calder Community Cares has made doorstep deliveries all along the Upper Calder Valley.

From Mytholmroyd to Todmorden, volunteers have been delivering soup, sandwiches and a smile, to people who are shielding, isolated or in need of extra support.

Working with local café, The Towngate Tearooms in Heptonstall and with Blue Sky Bakers in Hebden Bridge, volunteers have turned up on doorsteps with tasty and nourishing food and time for a chat and smile.

Helen Plaice, Calder Community Cares, said "It's lovely to get back to running Eat Together, Stay Home events again. Our local businesses thoroughly enjoy creating their delicious meals for us.

Our wonderful volunteers all enjoy the camaraderie of arriving at their allotted time and then the "treasure hunt" of delivering to homes. And our community friends really appreciate the thought and the kindness that goes into delivering a tasty meal to their door added to the togetherness of knowing that there are many others nearby eating a similar meal at the same time.

It really is a "win, win, win" situation"

After a long winter and with hope beginning to appear on the horizon, these conversations allowed volunteers to check in with people and start talking about what may come next.

Some of our community friends have let us know how important this project is

"As someone who's been in isolation for a year, I've greatly appreciated the kindness of volunteers who've dropped off occasional treats from local cafes. It's helped me to maintain some sense of connection to the outside world."

"Living without social contact is a real test of resilience. Exchanging a few words with a living human being now and then has reminded me that there will be a world outside to rejoin eventually."

"We are so grateful to Calder Community Cares for all the support we have had for over 10 months now, and just feel that we are in safe hands and we can turn to CCC if we have any worries".

Calder Community Cares was set up over a year ago to swiftly respond to the needs of the community and the impact of Covid-19. It has grown to an army of volunteers who provide practical and social support and will continue to work to with the community for as long as is needed.
