Hebden Royd Town Council improves access to High Hirst Woodmeadow

Friday, 2 June 2023

Hebden Royd Town Council is pleased to announce the completion of a level access footpath at local biodiversity hotspot, High Hirst Woodmeadow, Hebden Bridge.

The new path dramatically improves access to the wildlife site for users with mobility challenges. For example, the entrance to the site has been significantly widened. The path is gently-sloping, step-free, and will be wide enough for wheelchair and mobility scooter users to manoeuvre. The path also features passing places in case two wheelchairs are on the path at the same time.

Councillor Nikki Harvey expressed delight with the new improvements, "These upgrades ensure that everyone can enjoy the unparalleled views and benefit from access to local nature at High Hirst Woodmeadow. We are pleased that the site is now welcoming, safe and accessible for Hebden Royd wheelchair users." She commented.

Other improvements at the site include the development of a wetland habitat area and the installation of interpretation boards and safety signage. "These will significantly benefit local biodiversity and wildlife whilst enhancing the overall visitor experience". Councillor Harvey stated, adding, "We want people to experience the natural beauty of the site, and we want to look after the wildlife in the area. We are happy to say our initial 'pond trials' appear to be working well."

Hebden Royd Town Council is grateful to the National Lottery's 'Together for our Planet' Award for their contribution to these developments.
