Podcast: Real Voices
of Happy Valley

Tuesday, 27 June 2023

Our area has been on TV a lot recently. Happy Valley and The Gallows Pole with the nearby Last Tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack have shown our hills, valleys, towns and villages to the world.

But what of the real people of our valley?

The new podcast series, Real Voices of Happy Valley, aims to bring these real people of the Upper Valley to the fore.

Viv and Dave Boardman are following their Adventures in Retirement podcast, about their trip across Europe, North American and Australia with this new series.

Real Voices of Happy Valley, will highlight the wide range of real, fascinating people who populate our local communities.
Co-operation and a love of community will be highlighted which is already available on a variety of podcast platforms.

There are shows which give voice to those who made the Hebden Bridge Folk Roots weekend happen and another featuring Roger O'Doherty's response to lockdown: a calendar featuring local birdlife that has raised thousands of pounds for local community activity and foodbanks. Find out how Covid (and not being invited to Boris Johnson's parties) provided Roger with the time to develop his skills in framing the pictures, designing calendars and developing his skills in bird photography.

The shows will feature informal chats with people who are making a difference because of their community activity, 'never give up' and 'do it yourself' attitudes.

The episode featuring the 2023 Folk Roots Festival includes the voices of many of those who make Hebden Bridge Folk Roots Festival happen. From the 'money honeys' who sell tickets to the sound engineer, photographer, company secretary and volunteers - all essential roles.

"Hebden Bridge has changed a lot in the 20-odd years we've been here" Viv told the HebWeb. "But despite the loss of practical shops, and the rise in Air B&Bs, the creative spirit is still here. And so are the caring, cooperative and defiant people that makes the valley the fabulous place that it is."
