Eating in: Porcus

My brother-in-law was a Lecturer in Animal Husbandry at an agricultural college. Sometimes, he had to show people around, but he never showed them the pig sheds. I think he was ashamed of the conditions the pigs were kept under.

Most pigs are kept under shameful conditions. Not those at Porcus, a farm in the hills above Todmorden run by Sarah Jane and Nataliya Clegg producing artisan pork products including gourmet sausages, charcuterie and their own ready meals.

They have 120 free-range pigs; all native breeds suited to the Calder Valley climate. Free range, truly outdoor living, native breeds, breathing fresh air and walking on real ground. Porcus products are not availably in Hebden Bridge, as far as I am aware.

The best way to get them is to buy them direct from the farm. It's a great place to visit and children will enjoy seeing the pigs and the piglets. If you search for 'Porcus' in Google maps you should be able to find them or give them a ring on 07539 836449.

Some products are available from The Post Office in Heptonstall, which is always a lovely village to visit. When I was there the other day, I got some sausages and a jar of meatballs in sauce. They stock a limited range but if there is something on the Porcus website that you want, they will try to get it for you. Give the post office a ring on 01422 844719
