Duke Street Food
We've been getting deliveries from Duke Street Food for a few years now. If you are on their list they 'WhatsApp' you on Wednesday to tell you about their 'weekend feast'. You go on the website, select the dishes you want and they will be delivered to your door on Friday afternoon.
I thought that they must have huge kitchens and lots of staff but the whole operation is run by Rhian and Sarah Holland Warhurst. Rhian used to run 'The Bear' café in Todmorden and has a degree in Event Management. Sarah used to run The Hawthorn in Haworth. They joined forces in 2019 to try and find a better work/life balance.
Originally, the plan was to be event caterers, and they still do that, but the dreaded Covid struck and there weren't any events. They had a rethink and came up with the idea of 'weekend feasts'. They have some land where they live so they produce a lot of fruit and vegetables in their propagators and polytunnels. Other ingredients are sourced locally.
At the moment they deliver to Todmorden, Walsden, Bacup, Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall, Blackshaw Head and Mytholmroyd. Each week the dishes are based on a different cuisine: Mexican, Middle East, Indian, Greek, Spanish, French or Italian so far. They are sort of 'small plates' or tapas like dishes, and 2 or 3 per person is usually plenty.
Vegetarians, vegans and gluten free diets are catered for, and there are mains, salads and desserts. Hebweb readers (and anyone else) can get a 'new customer' discount of 20% by using the code LOVE LOCAL throughout May and June. Minimum order is £20.
Rhian's Mum, who often does the deliveries, is Pam Warhurst – a food hero in her own right. She started the 'Incredible Edibles' movement in Todmorden, but that deserves its own post.
