"There are truths here which contradict how these events have been framed"
Rarely do you hear true stories of why people abandon their homes and set off on exhausting, terrifying international journeys to reach the UK. You also need binoculars to see tales of why there is a great desire to help new arrivals amongst massive numbers of volunteers from varied backgrounds.
Which is why it is a breath of fresh air to read We Came by Sea … and now, on 17 April, to be able to listen to Horatio Clare, the bestselling author of numerous books including the memoirs Running for the Hills and Truant, and the travel books A Single Swallow, Down to the Sea in Ships, Orison for a Curlew, Icebreaker and The Light in the Dark. His children's books include Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot and Aubrey and the Terrible Ladybirds.
Horatio's essays appear on BBC radio and in the FT, the Observer and the Spectator, among other publications. He lives in West Yorkshire.
Also speaking on the night is Tina Brocklebank, Director of Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary, who worked supporting refugees in Calais between 2015 and 2017 and remains a regular volunteer there including in late March this year. Like Horatio, Tina will be able to speak about the reality on the ground.
Refreshments available on the night.
