Celebrate the end of 2018 with the Berliner Philharmoniker’s glittering New Year’s Eve Concert.The only live cinema broadcast of the 2018/19 Berliner Philharmoniker Concert season, this fantastic event will be conducted by Daniel Barenboim, and Broadcast live from Berlin in high definition and 5.1 surround sound to selected cinemas across the UK.

Daniel Barenboim, one of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s oldest friends, also takes on the role of soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 26 – a work of sparkling beauty and nuanced expression.

There are also four famous works by Maurice Ravel, which create an impressive synthesis of elegance and originality. The final highlight is the Boléro, perhaps the most stunning crescendo in music history.

The cinema broadcast will feature exclusive interviews and programme insights.

Hebden Royd Christian Aid are delighted that they will be joined by Burnley Road School Choir and Hebden Bridge Junior Brass band as well as talented local musicians.

Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker

Peter Wright’s interpretation of The Nutcracker has been enchanting children and adults alike since its first performance by The Royal Ballet in 1984. Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet combined with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, iconic score are presented in a festive period setting with vivid designs to make this a charming and magical production.

Loosely based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the ballet begins in the 19th-century German home of the Stahlbaums, where they are hosting a lively Christmas party. The period setting is captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs, which include authentic Christmas tree decorations that are magically brought to life. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love.

Pennine Community Power public meeting

Pennine Community Power is holding a public meeting on Thursday 29th November at 8.15pm at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. There will be two speakers:

A speaker on Carbon Coop's People Powered Retrofit project, which has received government funding for an initial six months of research and development.

David Nugent from Calder Valley Community Land Trust will talk about their approach to sustainability and the possible ways that the CLT can work together with Pennine Community Power.

The King and I: From the London Palladium

We are excited to bring the critically-acclaimed The King and I from the London Palladium to Hebden Bridge Picture House on 29 November, with ‘Broadway’s undisputed Queen’ (The Sunday Times) Kelli O’Hara (The Bridges of Madison County, Nice Work if You Can Get It, The Light in the Piazza) stealing the show in the role of a lifetime as Ann Leonowens and Ken Watanabe (Inception, The Last Samurai, Memoirs of a Geisha) playing the part of the King of Siam.

The much-loved musical tells the story of an unconventional and tempestuous relationship which develops between the King of Siam and Anna. After the huge success of the Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I, the production extended its engagement for a final three weeks to Saturday 29th September at London’s iconic Palladium, where this cinema broadcast was filmed.

How the Welfare State really came about

Save the Signal Box

Following recent leafleting at Hebden Bridge station, a number of people have given their contact details to say that they are potentially interested in being involved in the campaign to secure the HB signal box in community ownership. The two organisations leading the initiatives, the Friends of HB Station and the Calder Valley Community Land Trust, have called an informal meeting on Sunday, 25 November at 4pm.

This will be a chance to brief people on the discussions so far with Network Rail, the ideas which the Community Land Trust has for ways to preserve the signal box over the longer term, and the possible sources of funding we have identified. We also hope that it may be possible to establish an embryonic Friends of the Signal Box.

Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse.

Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991.

Royal Ballet Live: La Bayadere (12A)

An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877, and was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadère as a child in Leningrad and created this production in 1980. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.

The Kingdom of the Shades scene in Act III is one of the ballet's highlights, in which a series of arabesques across the moonlit stage demonstrates the strength of the corps de ballet and the beauty of Marius Petipa's choreography. The ballet also contains roles of very different styles for two ballerinas in Nikiya and Gamzatti, a spectacular virtuoso solo for the Bronze Idol, and stunning pas de deux for Solor with both Nikiya and Gamzatti.

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences.

Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding in battle.

A former electrician, who decided to change profession after seeing Christy Moore perform on Irish TV, Dublin-born traditional singer and bouzouki player Daoirí (pronounced ‘Derry’) Farrell is being described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. 

“True Born Irishman” his latest album was released in October 2016 to huge acclaim. As the final touches were being made to the album he was flown to Manchester to do a live session on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe. Two UK tours and UK festival dates followed in 2017 and calls came from across the world and gigs in Australia, Canada, Belgium, Denmark followed.

The White Bird Project

Join us to celebrate PEACE with the people of our towns and see the installation of a huge flock of white birds in the court yard of Hebden Town Hall.

Gather in St George's Square from 5.15pm to hear the stunning sound of the Calder Valley Voices who will be singing songs of PEACE to warm our souls. We will then be led to the Town Hall for complimentary refreshments, listen to the Hebden Bridge Brass Band, and to launch the exhibit of over a thousand white birds.

Public Meeting called by Calder Valley Community Land Trust

Putting the Vision Back into Public and Council Housing

How can we once again make publicly provided housing something we can all be proud of? In the final public meeting called by Calder Valley Community Land Trust, we're welcoming three eminent national speakers to Hebden Bridge Town Hall. 

John Boughton will be able to remind us of the high hopes which once accompanied the idea of publicly-provided housing. His book on the history of council housing, Municipal Dreams, has recently been published.

Rebecca Tunstall is the Joseph Rowntree Professor of Housing Policy at the University of York and her particular interests are social housing, neighbourhoods and inequality. Since 2003 she has also been a Fellow at the Brookings Institute in Washington DC.

Eileen Short is an active campaigner for decent, sustainable council homes. She is heavily engaged in her community in her own area of east London, and is also on the executive of the Defend Council Housing campaign.

Die Walküre is the second work and ‘first evening’ of Richard Wagner’s four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, following Das Rheingold. It has become the most performed opera of the cycle, loved and admired for its nuanced and intelligent exploration of complex family entanglements, expressed through music of astonishing power – perhaps nowhere more so than in the glorious music for the incestuous lovers Siegmund and Sieglinde.

Wotan’s voyage of self-discovery and ultimate resignation are at the heart of Keith Warner’s production, created for The Royal Opera in 2005. His great Act II monologue is set in a disastrous ruin of the Valhalla we saw in Das Rheingold – a striking representation of Wotan’s own inner decline and the gods’ incipient twilight. Visual motifs reflect the structure of Wagner’s score, which shows the composer at his most radical and most lyrical.

People all full of business: the people of Halifax at the end of 17th Century.

The legacy of the late Alan Petford continues with groups working on projects that he inspired, such as the transcription and publication of wills, inventories and other probate documents for the whole parish of Halifax. The township of Halifax, at the end of the 17th century, was indeed full of business, as Daniel Defoe noted, and the wills and inventories in this latest publication allow us to peer into the details of their lives.

Ted Hughes Festival

The 2018 Ted Hughes Festival will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of the poet laureate Ted Hughes and the 50th anniversary of the publication of his book The Iron Man. There are six Festival events planned by the Elmet Trust.

Simon Armitage and Frieda Hughes

Friday 19th October 2018 – 7.30pm – 9pm

An evening of poetry readings by Simon Armitage, patron of the Elmet Trust, and Frieda Hughes at Hope Baptist Chapel in Hebden Bridge.

Frieda is the daughter of two of the most celebrated and finest poets of the twentieth century- Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, and she has a distinctive poetic voice all her own. She needs to have a strong original voice to be heard above the music of her parents' poetry and she has her own music. She has published seven collections, 45, a poetic autobiography published in America, and has just published a selected poems Out of The Ashes for which she has chosen the poems herself. She has written books for children and is also a respected artist. She is the subject of one of Ted Hughes' best known poems, Full Moon and Little Frieda.

Simon has published eleven poetry collections, the most recent last year The Unaccompanied. He also recently published his versions of Virgil's Georgic poems Still alongside photographs from the First World War which feel like distant relatives of Edward Thomas' poetry. He has written plays and translated classic poems. He is currently Professor of Poetry at Oxford University, following the distinguished footsteps of such as Robert Graves, W. H. Auden, Seamus Heaney and Geoffrey Hill. Simon is also Professor at Sheffield University and Leeds University. He is read widely in schools and has edited a selected collection of poems by Ted Hughes, who he knew. Simon is Patron of the Elmet Trust.

CND 60th Anniversary

To mark the 60th anniversary year of the founding of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Calder Valley CND have teamed up with the Hebden Bridge Picture House to put on a special showing of 'Carry Greenham Home' on Saturday 20th October. 

Beeban Kidron’s essential documentary – filmed while living on-site with co-director Amanda Richardson – depicts the courage, creativity and humour of Greenham’s women as they protested the storage of US nuclear cruise missiles at the RAF base. A vivid, seminal work of British feminism on film, Carry Greenham Home is a testament to the enduring

There are many people living in the valley who lived at or visited Greenham Common, and for whom this was an important part of their lives.

Calder Valley CND have put together an exhibition featuring the memories and memorabilia of these local women, to run alongside the film. There will be a special exhibition opening with food and drink on Thursday 18th October, at the Art Cafe on Hangingroyd from 6.30pm, and the exhibition itself runs to the end of the month. Mayerling is based on the true story of the deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera in 1889. This dark and intense ballet was created for The Royal Ballet in 1978 and is regarded by many as among Kenneth MacMillan's finest works. Orchestrated and arranged by John Lanchbery, the music of Franz Liszt sweeps the story to its intense conclusion, and sumptuous designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring to life the formal, oppressive world of the Austro-Hungarian court.

The large-scale crowd and court scenes show the whole Company off at its dramatic finest. But it is MacMillan's choreography for Rudolf, one of the most technically and emotionally demanding roles in the repertory for male dancers, that makes this ballet so iconic. Rudolf's emotional decline is charted through daring and visceral pas de deux with his mother, his wife and Mary Vetsera – choreography that pushes classical ballet to its limits.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (15)

October's Friends of the Picture House screening will be Luis Bunuel's surreal 1972 satire The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

Made when Bunuel was 71 years old, towards the end of a career rooted in the beginnings of the surrealist movements, the film comically torments a group of affluent friends who continually attempt to arrange a dinner together but are thwarted in various nonsensical, but bluntly accepted, ways. Through their veneer of politeness a sense of entitlement and their corruption seep through.

Lost Chord Ensemble

Exclusive bookable behind-the-scenes tours of the Picture House will be available at 10.30am & 11.30am in which you will visit the balcony, backstage and the projection box. You will also be given a brief history of the cinema.

Tours start in the foyer at 10.30am and 11.30am prompt and last approximately 45mins each. Regretfully, the behind the scenes tour is not wheelchair accessible due to the locations on the tour requiring stair climbing.

Welcome to our September Lunchtime Live lively line up. We have a lot of homegrown talent this month with trio String Thing who will be having us dancing and tapping our feet to their musical beat. Young Performer Ethan Stott is based in Mirfield, he normally plays with his band 'Lucy' but for Lunchtime Live he is playing solo with some of his favourite tunes from Fratellis and Artic Monkeys.

Well known performer Lorry Dowling (Pepperjam) will be getting us into the reggae, ska and soul musical vibe, that will leave you wanting more more more. Lorry has a way of getting the crowds up and dancing and creating a lovely atmosphere wherever he performs. Outside the Box performed at the Hebden Folk Roots Festival in May and had everyone laughing and singing by the end of the evening. Jacky's Fantastic is a regular on the circuit, 'an energetic four piece folk rock band, featuring acoustic rhythm, electric lead, percussion and bass.

It is a pay as you feel event. Everyone is Welcome. Refreshments are available. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

September's Friends of the Picture House screening will be the 2013 Georgian-Estonian production Tangerines.

Set during the brief 1992 war between Georgia and the partially-recognised state of Abkhazia, the film follows an elderly farmer who resists fleeing his village in order to help a friend with the Tangerine harvest, and takes into his care two injured soldiers - one Georgian, one Chechen. 

Oscar nominated, with dark biting humour, it is an affecting rumination on the futility arising in conflict.

Allsorts with Storyteller Nell Pheonix

This month we welcome Nell Phoenix to 'The Shaggy Dog Storytellers.

Nell is a London based professional storyteller with a global reputation for telling tales that excite and arouse the imagination. Her stories are traditional, re-told to amaze, provoke wonder and awe and to make you laugh.

She travels to all parts of the UK and far off places to teach storytelling skills and share stories with audiences of all ages in venues of all shapes and sizes.

For us, she's bringing the highlights of her various shows: 'Little Red Riding Hood and Other Lost Girls,' 'Trickster Tales' and a selection of 'Bawdy Stories' that we've been warned are definitely for an adult audience! Intrigued? You should be.

Come and join us on Friday 31st August at 8pm upstairs in The Stubbing Wharf, King St, Hebden Bridge for an evening of 'Allsorts.' 

Blackshaw Head Fete

Family friendly local Fete on Saturday 1st September at 1.30pm. A fun-packed community event with live music, food and drink stalls, produce and craft competition, face painting, dog show, storytelling, puppet show and bouncy castle. Plus adult and junior fell race.

With a lots of large tents and indoor space at the Blackshaw Head Chapel it’s a great event come rain or shine.

Fete starts from 1.30pm until approx. 5pm. Limited parking so why not get the 596 bus up from Hebden Bridge – every 20 mins past the hour.  Bus times

Staffed by club members between the hours of 10am and 4pm and takes place at Hebden Bridge Town Hall.

There will be a display of around 60 or so images, taken by club members, and the event is free to all.  The club's 2019 Hebden Bridge calendar will be on sale at the event.

Young dancers and singers from the the Lajee Cultural Centre

On August 16 and 17, Halifax Friends of Palestine are proud to be hosting a visit by a group of young dancers and singers from the the Lajee Cultural Centre in the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. They have been touring the country performing and we will be their last stop before they return to Palestine. More about this amazing cultural centre

They will arrive in Hebden Bridge at 11.30 on Thursday, 16 August at the Town Hall and will have lunch here before seeing our town and going on to their hosts. On Friday, they will be flash-dancing in Halifax, which should be a sight to remember, before giving a more formal performance in the evening. All will be welcome at the performance (details to follow) and if you wish to greet them in Hebden then be at the Town hall.

The Friday evening performance will be at  Pellon Community Centre, 45 Church Lane, Halifax, HX2 0JG with a start time of 6.30. Food will be available.

The 844s at Wadsworth

Top local rhythm and blues band The 844s will be playing three sets at Wadsworth Community Centre on Saturday 18th August. Admission costs £5, and doors open at 7.00pm. Food and cask ales will be available.

The 844s are vocalist and harmonica ace Dave Rigg, lead guitarist Martin McGroarty - a great player with a long musical pedigree, bassist Jerome Dineen, drummer Jim Duffy, and rhythm guitarist and second vocalist Wally Woodcock.

The band plays a mixture of original compositions and covers, ranging from slow-burn blues to high-energy rock. They played here last November, and got the joint jumping - and that's just what they plan to do again!

Wainsgate Chapel Concert: Ghost School

Kendel Nicholson - Meet The Artist

Kendel is an Illustrator and Tattooist based out of Black Stone Tattoo in Todmorden. Her style is predominantly illustrative dotwork designs inspired by floral and plant life, animals, entomology, curiosities and popular culture.

She studied Illustration at Manchester Metropolitan University where she graduated in 2015. Since then she has gone on to do various exhibitions all over the UK, selling prints and merchandise at art fairs, in retail stores and also in her online shop. She began her tattooing journey in 2016.

August's Friends of the Picture House screening will be Merchant/Ivory's 1993 drama The Remains of the Day

Adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant continued a long string of critical and commercial successes with this 1930s-set tale of a butler (Anthony Hopkins) whose loyalty to his master (James Fox) leads him through a life of deep repression of his own feelings, including those he harbours for Emma Thompson's ebulliant housekeeper.

The film was something of a cultural touchstone in '90s British cinema, and Hopkins won his second Best Actor Oscar in three years.

'Dearest Daisy'

Hebden Bridge based dance company Northern Rascals is taking the plunge to tell an Edwardian love story at Bramley Baths, Leeds, on Saturday August 11th, with contemporary dancers and opera singers performing both in and out of the water.

'Dearest Daisy' follows an Edwardian love story after a chance meeting between a couple at a swimming fete in 1904 - the year the Edwardian Bramley Baths were built.

Vintage Car Weekend

The Vintage Weekend is an annual rally for vintage, veteran and classic vehicles held in the West Yorkshire Town of Hebden Bridge, in the heart of the South Pennines, with different classes on each day. Over the weekend there is huge display of over 600 cars, motorcycles, military and commercial vehicles. Described by Classic Car Weekly as 'One of Britain's best car shows'.

The Vintage Weekend is now in its 36th year, with the first rally held in 1983. It is interesting to note that brand new cars on display in dealer's showrooms that year are now eligible to attend the Saturday Rally. Almost all the famous British marques are represented at the rally, along with famous names from across the world.

Artsmill's Festival Exhibition

In support of their chart-topping seventh studio album Drones, the Grammy Award-winning rock band Muse embarked on their ambitious Drones World Tour, playing over 130 dates across the globe in support of the acclaimed concept album. For the very first time, the band performed "in the round" from the middle of the arena, with the stage design a configuration giving fans a full 360 degree audio/visual experience.

Hebden Bridge Co-operative heritage walk

11 am.

Hebden Bridge in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was known as an important national centre of  The Co-operative movement.

This heritage walk will provide the opportunity to learn both of the Nutclough Mill (home of the worker-run fustian manufacturing site for almost fifty years) and of The Hebden Bridge Industrial Co-operative Society. Also included will be a short visit to the graves of co-operative pioneers Joseph Greenwood and Jesse Gray at Sandy Gate burial ground.

Leader:  Andrew Bibby, author of "All Our Own Work" the story of Nutclough Co-op.

Meet:  Hebden Bridge visitors Centre, 1 New Rd, Hebden Bridge HX7 8AD, 11 am. The walk finishes at 12.45 pm when participants will be able to if they wish to have a drink in the co-operatively run Fox and Goose pub.

Cost:  No charge, but donations to Overgate Hospice can be made.

Details:  Mainly flat but involves a climb from Keighley Road to Sandy Gate.  Dogs are welcome but only if they are well behaved and kept on leads throughout. Apologies, only the first half of the walk is wheelchair friendly.

The Hepton Singers' summer concert, being held in Heptonstall church on Sun 8 July, will be a special one for the choir and for their current musical director, Alison West. After 33 years with the chamber choir, Alison has announced her decision to stand down from her role.

** Don't miss this ** This small selection of images from the 1950s/60s gives an insight into the amazing artistic skills of Alice. This 'sneak preview' will be on show for the duration of the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival - 10 days only! The full collection will be unveiled at a major exhibition next year (which, from feedback received so far we fully expect to tour nationally).

Visitors will be able to order *strictly limited* first edition prints at the exhibition in Hebden Bridge at the Birchcliffe Centre 11am - 3pm. 21st June - 1st July.

This exhibition is edited and presented by the After Alice Project and Pennine Horizons Digital Archive.

Shaggy Dog Storytellers are proud to present Dougie Mackay at The Stubbing Wharf, Hebden Bridge on Friday 29th June 2018. 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start. £7 admission.

There’s more to Scotland than meets the eye, for amidst the bonnie hills, craggy coasts and lush, green glens, dwell some truly curious beings.

Storyteller Dougie Mackay evokes the gnarly soul of Scotland as clan chiefs, crones, fishermen and fools meet faeries, selkies, kelpies and giants in a weirdly wonderful ceilidh of classic tales and local legends. Bring an iron pin for protection, offerings of oatcakes to carry favour, and watch out for a black dog or yellow-horned goat, as it just may be 'he who should not be named' in cunning disguise.

Dougie is a forward-thinking community artist who is prominent amongst Scotland's emerging storytellers and is passionate about rejuvenating "ceilidh culture”. Hope to see you there!

A day of fun, learning, sharing and creating all about food at Todmorden Community College on Saturday 23 June - there'll be tastings, arts activities, storytelling, workshops, demos, discussions and a chance to try your hand at plate spinning and other circus skills.

Two conferences with the themes of Resilience (in Mytholmroyd) and Placemaking (in Todmorden), both on Friday 22 June 

A junk food extravaganza in the Piece Hall, Halifax, on Sunday 24 June where we'll attempt to feed the five thousand with surplus food and there'll be a unique exhibition about the problem of waste food in our society.

The Hebden Bridge March Contest draws in a number of brass bands ranging from youth to championship section standards. Competing bands enjoy a traditional atmosphere as they march down the cobbled streets of Hebden Bridge, where they then play a chosen hymn and march.

Midgley Open Gardens

Don’t miss the Midgley Open Gardens event which takes place over the weekend of 9th and 10th June.

A group of 18 keen and committed gardeners will be opening their gates to visitors, with everyone assured of a warm welcome.   As usual, a varied range of gardens will be on display, from tiny intimate courtyards to large rambling woodland gardens.  Some gardens are new and developing, whilst others have matured over many years, but each displays a unique style of gardening to suit the individual setting.

Visitors are invited to take their time to relax amongst beautiful planting displays and take in the stunning views that provide the backdrop to many of Midgley’s gardens.

As well as the lovely gardens, visitors enjoy chatting to the friendly and enthusiastic garden hosts, who are always happy to share their experiences of gardening in sometimes challenging Pennine conditions.

Gardens are open from 11am to 5pm on both days.  Several gardens will be serving refreshments, with some offering plants for sale.  Homemade lunches will be served throughout the day at Midgley Community Room.  Tickets valid for both days cost £5 and can be bought from selected gardens on the day or from Midgley shop.  Accompanied children are free.

Limited parking is available at Midgley school, but visitors are encouraged to travel by bus, bike or on foot if possible.

The Fox and Goose

As part our spring Cider Festival we are pleased to welcome Soma. The band Soma brings together four colourful musicians with very varied backgrounds. Expect East European song, jazz, folk, middle eastern frame drums, psychedelia and a touch of shamanism...

They formed Soma in 2016 with a passion to explore and celebrate connection: between individuals… traditions… mind and body… people and earth. This is fusion at its best: the bringing together of elements to create something fresh, magical, without preconceptions. Music which is more than the sum of its parts. Music to gladden the spirit.

The Hanging of a Mouse 

This month at The Shaggy Dog Storytellers we welcome the great Hugh Lupton with an evening of tales from Medieval Wales.

In ‘The Hanging of a Mouse’, Hugh will be telling some of the stories from the Mabinogion and talking about the moment in history when these extraordinary, magical tales moved from the oral tradition to the written page.

Celebrating the release of his latest novel The Assembly of the Severed Head this piece is by turns spiritual, magical, passionate, tender, visceral and gory. Beautifully crafted. And its backbone is a humane engagement with the power and function of story.

Dementia Friendly Screening

Our occasional dementia friendly screenings provide an opportunity for people with dementia, together with friends or family, to enjoy a trip out to the cinema. We aim to programme classic feel good films that everyone can enjoy together.

Tickets available on the door, for cash only (and not in advance). Usual admission prices will apply. In each case doors open 45 minutes before the film start time shown.

Adjustments for dementia friendly screenings include:

A relaxed and friendly environment in which everyone present within the Picture House will be aware of the needs of dementia sufferers.

Lights left on low to allow people to move about without the risk of tripping, and to see where they are going. All Picture House facilities clearly labelled and signposted.

Sound level a little reduced.

No trailers, adverts or introductory music whilst waiting for the film to begin, unless they are embedded into the film.

Customers free to sing along to songs within the film or to talk.

Disabled access and wheelchair spaces available – up to 10 in the stalls.

3rd Annual Blazing Saddles Brompton Hill Climb

The Blazing Saddles Brompton Hill Climb is back for it’s 3rd year!

Meet at: Mytholmroyd Community Centre

On Saturday 19th May, Blazing Saddles are lending out Bromptons for an hour at a time. Test out the bike’s reputation on the Cragg Road hill climb out of Mytholmroyd, up to Blackstone Edge Reservoir [the longest continuous hill climb in England.

Book a ride and challenge yourself in the arts of bike folding and uphill pedalling.

Every hill climber will be named on the leaderboard.

'Unrest' at Hebden Bridge Picture House

There will be a special showing of the Oscar nominated documentary 'Unrest' at the Picture House on the 30th April at 7.45pm.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a truly global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless musical set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events leading to the Crucifixion but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, a tragic figure dissatisfied with the direction Jesus is steering his disciples.

Written in 1970 with lyrics by Sir Tim Rice and music by Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, this production is crammed full of great songs such as 'Heaven On Their Minds', 'Everything's Alright' and of course 'Superstar'.

Directed by Helen Clarkson and Emma Cook, this adult section musical will be as memorable as the eternal story it depicts.   

Rowan Hardy Exhibition @The Fox and Goose

Rowan Hardy is a fine artist living and working in Yorkshire. This exhibition features work that capture Fleeting changes in light, the brilliant colours in nature, scenes of urban life: the aim is to capture the moment. 

The artist paints directly from life, using oils, watercolour and ink.  Come and meet Rowan on 27th April from 7.30pm to discuss the work and view this stunning exhibition. The exhibition runs from Monday 23rd April until Monday 28th May.

Seven Centuries Of Recorded Floods In The Calder Valley

Why are they getting worse? What can we learn from history? Has the Environment Agency learnt anything from history?

Nick Wilding

Using evidence stretching back to the 14th Century, Nick Wilding compares the 2015 Boxing Day floods and other recent inundations to accounts of floods from previous centuries. In the course of doing so, he discovers some interesting analogies. He traces the course of the tributaries that feed the River Calder and finds that the origins of extreme flood events in the past were in many ways no different to the ones that cause them today. However, he finds that today's floods have been exacerbated by a range of late 20th Century and 21st Century factors that were not applicable in days gone by.    

Nick Wilding is an ex BBC producer, an independent filmmaker and historical researcher, who has made a string of documentaries on a wide range of local Calder Valley subjects and has prepared talks, interspersed with extracts from his films, based upon his recorded interviews with local people and his own research.

The fabulous Catfish Skillet are playing the Fox and Goose from 7pm on Sunday 15th April 2018.

World Dock Pudding Championship 2018 - cancelled

"Massive apologies but, due to the never ending cold spell, there are no docks so we are having to cancel the championship for 2018. The organisers are all gutted as this is a fantastic local event but, unfortunately, the weather is against us. We’d like to thank all the stall holders for their interest and apologies again. The World Dock Pudding Championship is an annual event in Mytholmroyd. First held in 1971, it celebrates the dock pudding, a typical West Yorkshire dish.

On April 7th, 2018, ‘Johnny Powell and the Seasonal Beasts’ will release a different kind of album. Described by Piccadilly Records as ‘Brilliantly eccentric outsider indie for the soul’, the Hebden Bridge band are ditching soulless plastic CDs and releasing their new 9 song album as an ethical handcrafted and handbound book of illustrated poetry, the lyrics, to go against the grain of throw away products.

BBC Introducing described their 2017 EP ‘Five Past Lives’ as ‘Incredible songwriting’ and ‘Absolutely haunting’.

There will be an album launch at Artsmill, Hebden Bridge on Saturday April 7th (open to the public) featuring a wealth of local talent who have been involved in the ambitious project.

The exhibition on the night will be a collection of specially commissioned illustrations and photographs, presented as high quality giclée prints. The pieces are the artists’ personal interpretations of the feeling or meaning of the songs. There will also be performances by poets who have also offered their own interpretations, and of course, performances of new music by the band themselves.

Flooding in the Upper Calder Valley since Medieval Times

An exhibition of photographs, accounts and historical data. At the Town Hall

Images from around the Upper Valley and extracts from press and individual accounts of the events. Measure yourself against the flood marker showing the height of floods at the Picture House. Information about flooding in the 17th and 18th centuries.

There is also information about local volunteer groups who are working to reduce the dangers of flooding in this area.

Two tales of tricksters who break the rules and get away with it: one from the borders of Wales and England, the other from Brittany: told in words, music, dance and song.

The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein's birth with an all-Bernstein programme from Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon.

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical – and many of Bernstein's scores are remarkably well suited to dance. He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins, their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer's birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein's music.

The programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, marking each artist's first foray into Bernstein. At the heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett's The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein's soul-searching Second Symphony. Both symphony and ballet are both inspired by W.H. Auden's masterful modernist poem, itself written in response to the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty that followed the end of World War II.

Township Boundaries and Commons Disputes in the South Pennines

Dr. Nigel Smith

In upland areas, boundaries across moorland were frequently subject to dispute occasioned by disagreements over grazing and other rights of common. The definition of boundaries thus became an increasingly common issue that reached a litigious peak during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This talk will cover a number of disputes around the Calder Valley but will focus on two disputes: one between Midgley and Wadsworth that was still ongoing in the nineteenth century, and one involving protracted litigation by Langfield in the early seventeenth century. This litigation provides evidence of a long-lost boundary that sheds some light on certain early township territories within the Upper Calder Valley. Nigel's research interests focus on the landscape and agricultural history of the Upper Calder valley and the wider South Pennines. He has recently edited "History in the South Pennines: The Legacy of Alan Petford", a volume of essays dedicated to the late Alan Petford.

Our time together will include short Bible reflections, times of silence and creative approaches to prayer. Coffee and croissants will be available from 9.30am and throughout the moming.

The Norman Conquest of Yorkshire

Dr. Paul Dalton

The Norman conquest of England is often associated with the year 1066, and with the battle of Hastings, fought on 14 October that year, in which the army of William, duke of Normandy, defeated and killed Harold Godwineson, king of the English. In fact, the Norman conquest took many years to achieve. There was much violent resistance to the rule of William the Conqueror after 1066, especially in northern England. This talk will discuss the nature of this resistance in Yorkshire and the brutal measures William used to overcome it, including his infamous 'harrying of the North'. It will also explore the dramatic, and in some respects catastrophic, impact of the Norman conquest on the aristocratic society, landholding, government, wealth, and landscape of power in Yorkshire between 1066 and 1087.

Dr Paul Dalton is a Principal Lecturer in Medieval History at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has published widely on Anglo-Norman history, including a book entitled Conquest, Anarchy and Lordship: Yorkshire 1066-1154, published by Cambridge University Press.

Top UK songwriters Steve Tilston and Jez Lowe have been enjoying the fruits of a performing partnership that began just a couple of years ago, and resulted in their much acclaimed first album together, entitled THE JANUS GAME, in early 2017. The pair have now developed this successful collaboration into an occasional band that will be enhancing some of their future shows.

The Tilston Lowe Sometimers will feature two fellow musicians, both of whom have worked extensively with Steve and Jez in the past – Chris Parkinson (accordion/ keyboards) and Hugh Bradley (double-bass). Playing new co-written songs from The Janus Game plus a selection of familiar favourites from their individual repertoires.

Hallfalldown with Helen McCreary

Hallfalldown, aka Des Horsfall & Nick Hall, are two fine singer-songwriters in a fresh alliance performing their own blend of Country, Folk and Rock. The pair have over 60 years of combined gigging and recording experience.

Nick is one half of award winning duo 'Plumhall' and former guitarist for Folk legends Magna Carta. Des has worked recently with Rock legend Pete Townshend - is Kuschty Rye front-man and some time member of Slim Chance (Ronnie Lane's band after leaving the faces)

In support is Helen McCreary. Originally from New York, Helen, fresh out of college picked up a guitar in 2013 and started writing songs. Her first album "The Lovely Days" was released in 2016 to universal acclaim. "Her songs are delightful with beautiful melodies and insightful lyrics. This exhibition is a retrospective and covers over a decade of this artist's production.

The artist came late to drawing and painting in the joyous era of 1980s adult education, an incredible time of discovery and re-invention for so many. Carolyn has a studio here at Artsmill and is a proud resident of Hebden Bridge with its incredible history.

'It is about things lost and found. The first part of the exhibition relates to Malta as a home, both real and imagined. The second relates to time lost when someone is incarcerated in a prison but that time is found again through creativity. The third relates to the 'lost and found' of forensics.'

Seven Centuries Of Recorded Floods In The Calder Valley

Why are they getting worse? What can we learn from history? Has the Environment Agency learnt anything from history?

Nick Wilding

Using evidence stretching back to the 14th Century, Nick Wilding compares the 2015 Boxing Day floods and other recent inundations to accounts of floods from previous centuries. In the course of doing so, he discovers some interesting analogies. He traces the course of the tributaries that feed the River Calder and finds that the origins of extreme flood events in the past were in many ways no different to the ones that cause them today. However, he finds that today's floods have been exacerbated by a range of late 20th Century and 21st Century factors that were not applicable in days gone by.    

Nick Wilding is an ex BBC producer, an independent filmmaker and historical researcher, who has made a string of documentaries on a wide range of local Calder Valley subjects and has prepared talks, interspersed with extracts from his films, based upon his recorded interviews with local people and his own research.

Shakespeare’s tale of love and loss becomes compelling dance drama in Christopher Wheeldon’s ballet adaptation, with music by Joby Talbot (Alice in Wonderland Oct 17).

King Leontes, possessed by a mad jealousy, believes his pregnant wife Hermione to be having an affair with his childhood friend King Polixenes. His actions tear their families apart.

Hermione’s baby daughter is abandoned and Hermione and their son die of distress. The baby Perdita, rescued by a shepherd, grows up to fall in love with Florizel, son of Polixenes. The young couple is reunited with the remorseful Leontes and Hermione returns from the dead.

Our occasional dementia friendly screenings provide an opportunity for people with dementia, together with friends or family, to enjoy a trip out to the cinema.

Screening at 11am, with doors opening at 10.15am, and tickets only available to purchase on the door, for cash.

Adjustments include:

• A relaxed and friendly environment in which everyone present within the Picture House will be aware of the needs of dementia sufferers.
• Lights left on low to allow people to move about without the risk of tripping, and to see where they are going.

The Vagina Monologues

A group of local women have come together to join a global movement to rise, resist and unite. In the month of February the Vagina Monologues is being performed all over the world to raise awareness and money for local groups working to end violence against women and girls. The sprit of the play is one of celebration and humour.

The Vagina Monologues introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six year old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a vagina workshop participant, a woman who witnesses the birth of her Granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and a feminist happy to have found a man who ‘liked to look at it’.

John Billingsley

John's recent research has been into the material remains of folk magic in our built environment, comprising carvings, deposits and customs aimed at protecting buildings and households. In this talk he suggests that the evil eye should not be seen as an aspect of witchcraft, but as an aspect of human personality aggravated by the growth of wealth disparity, especially in the 17th century. 

John Billingsley's interest in Calder Valley history has focussed on local folklore, particularly legends and aspects of traditional folk magic. He has written or edited seven books and organised or presented various conferences on such topics. He has also edited the antiquarian magazine Northern Earth since 1991.

Hebden Bridge Picture House is delighted to host an audience Q&A with director Len Collin, following a screening of his film Sanctuary.

Sanctuary is a world first for actors with intellectual disability. Following on from pioneers such as Jaco Van Dormael's as Le huitième jour (1996) and Galvao's Colegas (2012) this film features nine wonderful actors with ID whom you will fall in love with. A funny film about sex, love, friends and freedom, things we take for granted, but for Larry with Downs and Sophie with Epilepsy it is a mountain to climb.

Scarpia sentences Cavaradossi to death – but promises Tosca that her lover can be saved if she gives herself to Scarpia. Tosca consents but as soon as the order has been given kills Scarpia. Scarpia’s menace continues even in death: betrayed by a double-cross, Cavaradossi dies and Tosca leaps to her death.

The People of the Parish Of Halifax: 1539 to 1670

Parish registers and the reconstruction of the population

During the Black Death of 1348, up to a half of the people of England died; it took two centuries before the country reached the same number of inhabitants again. Given that one single event can have such a dramatic impact on the social history of the nation, it is perhaps surprising that local historians have not devoted more time to understanding the size of local populations.  Whether it is in order to appreciate the impact of war, famine, disease, economic instability or political upheaval on a locality, it seems that the changing size of its population is an essential element of the local historian's evidential base.

This talk is the result of a group project run in Hebden Bridge by the Society. It aims to demonstrate how Halifax's legacy of parish registers can be used to discover the size of its population, where those people were living and what events impacted on them.

Calderdale once produced more fustian clothes than anywhere else on earth. Over the past hundred years the mills have gradually been converted into homes, offices, workshops and, particularly in Hebden Bridge, into artist studios.

Yet the cacophonous churn of the textile mill and ammoniacal tang of the tanneries has not vanished completely. Even today, echoes of industry can be found in artwork produced under the same roofs.

This exhibition continues that theme. Commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Dyers and designed and produced by two local artists, it commemorates the vast Yorkshire textile dyeing industry that dominated our valley 150 years ago.

Shown through a series of large stained glass panels, visitors will learn how North Sea kelp, Yorkshire shale and London urine ( ! ) were combined to form alum, the essential fixative used for dyeing clothes and indeed, stained glass windows.

You will also be able to see stained glass manufacture in person as the glazier constructs the final window of the series in the gallery itself.

Recognition, resilience and reward: Women and girls of the Upper Calder Valley during World War One

Recognising the many roles and considerable contributions of women and girls in the home, the community, industry and nursing on the Home Front and abroad on the War Front. These four years had a considerable impact on social class and gender expectations, and offered new opportunities in education and industry and in the workplace and the Armed Forces, rewarding them with Votes for Women.

Julia’s professional life has been devoted to education at school level then at policy, academic and non-governmental levels in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. She lived and worked for 15 years in conflict and post conflict countries and under military occupation.

Stall selling Palestinian Christmas crafts, ceramics, glassware, olive wood products, soaps and more. All products are handmade in the West Bank and your purchases will support local Palestinian businesses. 

Shaggy Dog Storytellers Christmas Bash

Shaggy Dog Storytellers are proud to present 'The Shaggy Dog Christmas Bash' on Friday 22nd December 2017 at the Stubbing Wharf, Hebden Bridge, 7.30 pm for a prompt 8.00 pm start.

£7 admission.

This will be a “Stories from the Floor” evening, so come and help celebrate a storytelling Christmas with the many talented tellers at the club.

There will be a spot for you to tell if you want one - or you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the variety of tellers and tales on offer.
